The charm of a dive at the Cave of the Bue Marino
The Cave of the Bue Marino in Cala Gonone is a natural site known throughout the world that lies on a stretch of sea with transparent turquoise and emerald waters in the Gulf of Orosei. Until the 1980’s, monk seals or sea cows, as they were called by Sardinians, lived in these waters.
Explored for the first time in 1947, it is one of the most beautiful natural sites in Italy. At the entrance, prehistoric drawings show that the cave had been inhabited since the prenuraghic age. Today you can visit the emerged part in a path that goes over one of the largest salt lakes in the world and allows you to see many stalactites and stalagmites of various colors. The underwater area of the cave of the Bue Marino can be explored only by experienced divers and just for the first 100-150 meters; some places in fact are still unexplored.
Here you can swim between stalactites and stalagmites and through a "water trap" it's possible to enter a large hall where the colonies of oyster fossils decorate the walls. Diving can be done only with expert guides.
